Fan’s Choice – Las Vegas – Mesa Grill

The suggestion was to try Bobby Flay’s restaurant.  Thank you so much for that!  I have been wanting to try Mesa Grill at the Caesar’s Palace for quite some time and this was just the excuse I needed.  I am here for the Saturday Night Foodie fans!

We went to Mesa Grill on a Saturday night, around10:30 p.m., and they were packed!  This was a very fun place with a lot going on.  I liked the different types of “flames” , like the copper metal flame door handles, which were incorporated throughout the décor .  We decided to sit at the bar versus waiting 30 to 40 minutes for the dining room.  They had an impressive tequila selection on display.  Some stuff I have seen before and a number of regulars.  One of the things we learned is they rotate out their 70+tequilas regularly.  They also had a number of Vodkas and Whiskeys.  They are known for their margaritas, which I would say, were very good.  One of their signature drinks, is the Cactus Berry margarita, which was so smooth even Kim liked it. Kim often claims that she “broke up with tequila a long time ago!”   Kim had a Strawberry Fields martini which was made with organic cucumber vodka, mint and muddle strawberries.

Because this was our second stop of the night we opted to just sample a few appetizers.  We started off with the Rough Cut Tuna “Nachos” and Tiger Shrimp + Roasted Garlic Corn Tamale.  Even though the place was packed the food came out fairly quickly.  It was rather impressive!!

The Rough Cut Tuna “Nachos” came with Mango-Habanero Hot Sauce, Avocado Crema and two different styles of chips for scooping.  The tuna reminded us of a Hawaiian Tuna “Poke” (or like a tuna tar tar for you non-Hawaiian officianados) but was not what we expected “nachos” to be.  The two sauces were very flavorful and it was presented well, but don’t need to go to a Booby Flay restaurant for Poke.

The Tiger Shrimp + Roasted Garlic Corn Tamale with Corn-Cilantro Sauce.  Oh my God! All I can say is who cares if there was shrimp in this.  This was one of, if not the best, tamales I have ever had!  The maza of the tamale itself was perfect, super tender with great texture and flavor.  Add the cream sauce and this was just unreal!!  Don’t get me wrong the shrimp were cooked to perfection and also had great flavor but really, who cares when you have a tamale like that.  This is a dish I will remember for a long time.

After the success of those two appetizers we decided to try a couple of more…so we could report back to you all, of course!  And yes we got more drinks too.  The bartender was very friendly which just added to the great experience.

We decided to try the Goat Cheese “Queso Fundido” with Rajas and Blue Corn Tortilla strips.  This came in what looked like a mini, rectangular, cast iron dish.  The goat cheese was piping hot, having come out of the broiler; it had a nice crust on top.  It had very good flavor but this dish was very rich.  If you like goat cheese then you will like this a lot.  Can I get more chips please!?!

Lastly, we ordered the Smoked Chicken and Black Bean Quesadilla with avocado and toasted garlic crème.  We really liked this one too.  It had very complex flavors with the garlic crème, cheese and smoked chicken.  The tortillas had a great texture and the flavors would burst into your mouth.  I would order this again but only after I try some of their other dishes first!

As you can tell we only liked Mesa Grill a little bit.  Actually this is one of the best food adventures we have had in Las Vegas. We will defiantly visit here again. Thank you for giving us an excuse to check it out!

Next stop will be “Hash House a Go Go” at the Imperial Palace

More to Watch also Means More to Eat! - Vermont Brownie Company

As you have figured out by now Kim and I both watch Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.  However that is not the only food related show we watch.  Throwdown with Bobby Flay has it’s own season pass on my TiVo.  This is another show that looks for the best.  I have watched this show from day one and enjoy it very much.

A month or so ago we watched an episode featuring the Vermont Brownie Company.  This one was a lot of fun because it focused on Brownies.  It turned out to be a very fun episode.  Bobby Flay did a great job showcasing the people and their brownies.  If you have a chance to see it I would recommend it.

This is the first sampling we have been able to do from the show.  We ordered a sampler pack so we could try a few of their creations.  Ordering online was easy, as you would expect this day and age.  They seemed a little pricey ~$4.25 each.  Don’t forget about shipping.  One of the things that was obvious per their website is they have been getting a lot of orders after their episode aired.  We ordered the brownies on Saturday and received them on Tuesday.  The packaging was well done and they were in perfect condition.

Here are the ones that were included in the sampler:

Signature Sampler

Dark Chocolate Chevre (One from the show)

Espresso Dulce de Leche

Mint Pattie

Signature Brownie (Incredible)

Peanut Butter

Maple Toffee Crunch

When all is said and done we very much enjoyed them.  They are rich and you can tell they use quality ingredients.  I really liked the touch of salt on a couple of them.  The Cherve was very good and I liked the texture from the big chocolate chunks.  Not surprising they won the Throwdown.  If you are in the mood for some delicious brownies and can wait a few days to get them I strongly recommend you check these guys out.  I think it will be worth the wait.

This is scary, first experience ordering treats on the web and it was a huge success.  With our addictive personalities this is going to be tasty!
