Kim Visits Chicago - The Depot, American Diner and Tre Kronor

I was in Chicago on business and decided to get another Triple D (Diners, Drive ins and Dives) under my belt. Call it the competitive nature of my husband coming out in me. While we’ve gone to 39 Triple Ds together, he has gone to two without me while traveling on business, so I wanted to get a few on my own. You know the saying, “it’s about the journey, not the destination”? Well keep that in mind as you follow along.

I hadn’t had lunch so I left the hotel around 4:30 p.m. thinking I could grab a quick “snack” at one triple D before meeting my friend Anna for dinner at another one. I hailed a cab to what I thought would be a Diner about 16 miles from my hotel. Well a $60 cab fare (of which he only charged me $40) and 60 minutes later, through an undesirable part of town, I arrive at The Depot, American Diner

Now if it wasn’t clear by the bars on the store fronts, the people of questionable parole status hanging out on the corners, abandoned industrial buildings, the pit bulls guarding the used car lots and my cabbie locking  the doors while at a stop light, then I definitely should have known what was coming when I read the Yelp reviews and they advise you not to go to this place after dark. Well it’s after 5:30 p.m. when we finally get there and clearly “after dark”. My cabbie refused to leave me at this place by myself so he parks in the lot next door. I walk briskly into the diner and grab a stool at the counter. I order the open-faced Turkey sandwich and lucky for me the cook had accidently served up two so my order came right away. Let’s get down to the food.  There was a thick slice of bread with turkey, gravy poured all over it and a side of mashed potatoes and cranberries. The sandwich was good ol’ home cooking but I’ve definitely had better. The gravy was kind of bland. However, the fresh cranberries were really good.  This ain’t your cranberry sauce in a can!

Open Faced Turkey Sandwich

When doing my research on this joint, I also noted that they were famous for their fresh, made-to-order, donut holes.  So a few bites of the turkey sandwich and it was time to move on! The old fashioned cake-like donuts came out fresh, tossed in cinnamon, sugar and lightly doused with powder sugar. They were accompanied by a warm, decadent, creamy mocha sauce. Now if these aren’t little pillows of love, I don’t know what is! They were hot, fresh and delicious!

Donuts and Mocha (Pillows of Love!)

I paid my bill, all of $14 bucks, and was ready to hit the road. My cabbie was surprised that I was only there 25 minutes. It’s slightly after 6 p.m. when we start heading back to the hotel. However, due to  much traffic, I decided to have him take me straight to Anna’s hotel so I could try to make it on time.
Shortly after 7 p.m., we arrive. The cabbie said he would take me to my next stop so I ran in the hotel to get Anna, and grab more cash from the ATM.

We took off towards the next Triple D stop,
Tre Kronor, which is on the other side of town. Now  an $85 dollar cab fare and about another hour, we arrive. This neighborhood was a lot safer so I told the cab driver he did not need to wait for us.

Anna and I walked into Tre Kronor, a little Scandinavian restaurant and it was like walking into a scene from Hans Christian Andersen. There was a decorative wood  A-frame and a huge mural of dancing trolls.

Mural of Dancing Trolls

I was desperately hoping they would let me order breakfast which is what they are known for. But alas, they stop serving breakfast at 3 p.m. So I resigned myself to order one of the dinner specials which was rainbow trout with sautéed spinach in a red pepper sauce and a side of au gratin potatoes. Anna was up for the adventure and went with their specialty of swedish meatballs served with mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers and housemade  lignonberry relish …I guess when in Rome and all that good stuff. Now I’m not usually a big cooked fish person as I prefer my fish in the sushi variety. But was this rainbow trout ever  delicious! It was lightly breaded with crushed macadamia nuts and drizzled with dredged butter. It was light and fresh (can I say that right after saying dredged in butter?) and the spinach added a salty crispness to the bite.

Anna said the meatballs were good but what she really liked were the lingonberries on the side. They reminded me of the cranberries that I’d had at The Deport but were a little smaller and sweeter. We were both trying to save room to sample the dessert so we pushed our plates aside and waited to be told about the dessert specials. Upon our waiter Joe’s recommendation, we ordered cinnamon roll bread pudding and almond cake with lemon cream sauce. The cinnamon rolls are made fresh in the morning for their breakfast crowd and then soaked in whatever liquid elixirs go into making bread pudding.

As Joe said, this is their way of reducing their carbon footprint. They might be reducing theirs but I can certainly say that I mine would grow if I didn’t stop myself. As if sampling two desserts wasn’t enough, the restaurant was empty now with just Anna, me and the servers inside. Joe approached us with a plate in each hand. He had two slices of apple cake, which he said they would have to throw away if we didn’t eat them. Well waste not, want not I say! Anna and I agreed to take one to sample and Joe and Cassie (another server) decided to share the other. It was equally delicious!

Apple Cake

They definitely score major points in the baked goods category. The restaurant was quaint, the wait staff friendly and their service superb.

Tre Kronor's Own Joe and Cassie

I’d definitely recommend stopping in if you are in Chicago. Maybe one of the next 5 trips I have planned for Chicago this year, I can return and try their breakfast.

Salt Lake City - Moochie's Meatballs, Philadelphia Sub Shop and Lone Star Taqueria

At this time I am sitting in my hotel room in Salt Lake City.  Some of the food I had yesterday and today compelled me to post an update.

One of the things I look forward to when I am traveling on business is I get to try new joints that I would normally not be able to get to.  The other part I like is every once in awhile you get to try a place that the locals believe should be showcased on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.  The lucky part for me is this trip I got to do both.  First off is Moochie’s Meatballs in downtown Salt Lake City.  This place is now on my favorites list.  Moochie’s is a fun little place that looks almost like a house in parts.

Outside Moochie's Meatballs

Inside Moochie's Meatballs

I went to Moochie’s last night straight from the airport.  This place is known for their sandwiches and subs.  I had a Philly cheese steak with mushrooms and onions.  Great sandwich!  I think it may be good enough for people that have lived in Philly.  LOL (I am expecting some comments on that one) Also I have not been to Philly to try the “real thing” but this is one the best if not the best I have had.

Philly Cheese Steak with Grilled Onions and Mushrooms

They also have meatball sandwiches as you would expect but when I walked in it was clear the Philly was the real deal!  The thing that tipped me off most was the sign that told you how to order one.

The people working there were super nice.  I was not the only on there that had seen the episode on DDD which was cool.  I chatted with one of the guys that worked there until my sandwich was ready.  Turns out I came at the right time because if I was to try stopping in at lunch they usually have a line that goes out the door and down the block.  You know they have kickin food if that is the case.   I almost forgot you have a to try the Jumpin’ Jalapeno Sauce on your cheese steak.  This stuff was incredible.  It really added some depth to their already super flavorful cheese steak.  I wanted some for home.  Yum Yum.

You need to check this place out!  However bring your appetite, as the sandwiches are tasty and big.  Five stars!

Moochie's Meatballs & More on Urbanspoon

Today for lunch I ate at Philadelphia Sub Shop in Clearfield, UT.  Yes I know what you are thinking but the “local” I was with said I had to try this place especially if I liked Moochie’s.  This joint was very good.  Not as friendly as Moochie’s but the food was on par.  It is very hard to compare the two sandwiches as they were nothing alike.

Cheese Steak from Philadelphia Sub Shop

These guys add something like pickles to their cheese steaks and the bread is super fresh.   The touch of pickle and their homemade sauce were a very good combination.  It was like nothing that I have had before but still very good.  If you are in the area then it is worth stopping at.  Be prepared to wait in line.

Lastly we have Lone Star Taqueria in Salt Lake City.  That is where I ate tonight.  This was is another DDD and when you see it you will understand why.  As a side note I have now been to more DDDs than Kim. :)

This is a very funky joint from the outside and a lot of fun on the inside.

Lots of people using their drive thru and a good stream of people picking up food and eating inside.  This joint serves Mexican food (if you did not get that from the name).    I walked in an ordered a camaron (shrimp) taco and a carne adovado (marinated pork) taco (Now I know what my buddy Jeff keeps talking about carne adovada).  Both of these tacos were incredible.  WOW.  The carne adovada was very tender with a ton of flavor, the chili powder and cumin stand our along with the gloves and garlic.  Each of these was in a soft corn tortilla.  Once again WOW.

Camaron and Carne Adovada Tacos

They were so good I grabbed a carne adovada burrito to go.  I just finished eating that bad boy and it was even better.   The burrito had a ton of meat with rice, beans, lettuce and pico de gallo.  This is another joint that I will be back to. (Maybe tomorrow before my flight)

Now there are three DDDs in Salt Lake City that I will have to visit again.  Who would have thought that SLC would be a food sanctuary?   Soon I will share my experiences from Red Iguana and Blue Plate Diner, which are both in SLC.

Now I need to go work through my food coma.  Have a great night!

Yelp Post from January 2009 - Matt's Big Breakfast

I wanted to start sharing some of our adventures over the last couple of years.  As I said before Kim and I have been to over thirty Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.  The last week of December in 2008 we decided to do a road trip to Phoenix through Sedona and back to California via Williams.  It took 5 days.  We saw a lot and ate a ton of great food.

On this trip I found what is still my favorite joint, Matt's Big Breakfast.  Here is the post I did on Yelp.  This was my first attempt to do a review on a restaurant.  Turned out people liked it.  I am planning to share more from that trip and other adventures but I think this is a good start!  Hope you Enjoy:

Matt's Big Breakfast - Phoenix, AZ

Yes, I will admit that my family watches Triple D.  Now with that said my wife and I have been to a few of the joints showcased on that show.  As many of you that have started this journey like we have you find killer places and some okay places.  Matt's is a KILLER place.

My wife and I were recently in the Phoenix area for a part of our vacation and planned to stop in for breakfast at Matt's the first morning.  We got there ~8am on Saturday morning and only had to wait about 15 minutes.  Yes the place was small but being the two of us it was not a challenge.  There are about 9 tables total (assuming setup for 2) and 8 or so counter spots.

The food is awesome!!  It was so good we changed our plans and went back the next morning!

Here is what we had:

Pork chop marinated with pesto and eggs with home fries, side of bacon and toast with their very tasty home made jelly.  The pork chop is to die for.  I am a big pork chop for breakfast fan and usually very disappointed.  Not at Matt's, it was tender and cooked perfectly.  My eggs were cooked exactly like I asked for and the bacon is like think slices of heaven!  I had to have bacon both mornings and I am not a breakfast bacon fan usually.  This bacon would make anything taste great!  My wife had the daily special which was chicken sausage, fresh spinach and fontina cheese scramble.  Once again cooked perfect, not greasy at all but with big flavor.  We both had home fries which were incredible.  Nice crust with some rosemary and caramelized onions.  Pretty close to perfect!

The next day my wife had the waffle, which she liked.  The fresh maple syrup was the real star of this dish.  She was kind enough to pass the bacon to me (I know twist my arm).  I had the breakfast special which was a sirloin steak, eggs and hash browns.  The steak was SUPER tender and cooked EXACTLY how I asked (you can tell I do not experience that often).  It was obviously a good cut of meat and had been seasoned very nicely.  The hash browns were very nice.  Crust on both sides and tender in the middle.  Exactly what you would hope for.  Lastly was their toast and home made jelly.  It was like butter!!!  Nothing like your store bought jelly.  I am not a jelly fan but ate all of it both mornings!!!

As for the service it was pretty good.  They were slammed on the first morning but were pleasant.  The family atmosphere really made the hustle and bustle not so bad.  The second time we went in they remembered us and took the time to talk for a few minutes and show their appreciation for us coming back so soon.  Very nice touch!

Overall this now my favorite breakfast joint from Triple D.  Whenever I travel to Phoenix I will plan to stop in.  I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants breakfast cooked the way it should be!

An-nyo'ng-ha-se-yo (Hello) Kogi Truck!

Gourmet food trucks are a growing trend.  They are cheaper to operate but at the same time they are known for putting out killer food.  Kogi Truck is no exception.  These guys are doing something new and fresh while also doing it right.  The reason I say that is they now have 4 trucks the cruise around socal serving up classic korean/mexican delights.  Did I say "classic"?  Hell yes!  Eat there once and you will call it a classic as well.  How many food trucks have you seen that have a line of 250+ waiting in in a parking lot at night in winter to get food?

Kim and I waited in line 2 hours to get our food and it was worth it.  The menu is small but flavorful and we tried a lot of it.  The unique part is they take classic korean ingredients made fresh and put a mexican almost "taqueria" twist on it.  Example would be korean BBQ short-ribs "kalbi" made into a taco or burrito with asian cabbage and different sauces.  Out of this world good.

This was our dinner.  It included a great bottle of 2008 Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel that we had at home.

Like I said we tried a lot off there menu.  Here is the break down.  If you want to see better pictures and a complete menu go to http://kogibbq.com/category/menu/.

Spicy Pork and Chicken Tacos

Kogi Kimchi Quesadilla (AWESOME!!)

Calamari Taco and Tres Leches Cake
The cake was to die for.  It shocked us both how good it was!

This was all mine!  A Kalbi Short-rib burrito.  Unreal!  Very hard to describe.  I think I need another one to do it justice.  The meat was marinated the caramelized to perfection, it had some good heat and the flavor combination was like nothing I have had before.  Yes I will do that again, and again!

I think I can get used to the growing trend of Gourmet Food Trucks.  That was our first and we are looking forward to more.  My father is looking forward to visiting the Grilled Cheese Truck.  Their menu looks delicious.  However they are only LA (Not that it will stop anyone from driving there).  It was nice to see Kogi have a truck in the OC.  They seem to be doing well so I am sure it is only a matter of time before more arrive with their delights.

Finally! This has been a long time coming!

I finally had to sit down and get writing.  My wife and I have been taking time to enjoy different food and libations for the last couple of years.  One thing you need to know about us is we have very addictive personalities.  So......... when we started watching a little TV show called Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network we were off and running.  If you have not yet watched the show and you like good food, I suggest you add a Tivo season pass ASAP!

There we were watching a bunch of these 30 minute shows where the host travels around the country finding the best, tastiest and funkiest joints there are.  We are talking the best burgers, the best smoked foods, the best breakfasts, so on and so on.  Well after a few of those, our mouths were watering, and we just had to try one. Our first Triple D (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) was Gaffey Street Diner in San Pedro, Ca.  The reason we went there:

Yes, that is the French Toast Supreme!  Cinnamon bread with fresh berries, almonds, fresh whipped cream and kalua sauce.  WOW.  My wife (Kim) loved it.  She has had it a number of times since.  One thing to note, if you are planning to try Gaffey Street Diner and someone in your group wants the French Toast Supreme then you will need to go on the weekend after 8am on Saturday.  Someday I will tell you why I know this much detail.

That breakfast was also the first time my parents had been to a Triple D.  It was my father's (Dan) birthday and they had been watching the show longer than us.  They both really enjoyed Gaffey's as well.  Now that I think about it my mom (Jane) had the same thing as Kim.  She loved it too, and like Kim has been back a number of times to get it again.

After Gaffey's Kim and I were hooked.  Since then we have been about 30+ different Triple Ds.  We have completed two driving vacations over the last year or so and stopped at most of the joints in California and Arizona.  There are lot of spectacular ones and a lot that were good but we do not need to go back to.  So far we have not been to a bad one.  I would like to share all of those experiences (at least the ones I remember) but I am not sure how I should do it.  If you have any suggestions please leave a comment below.  Should I post date posts or maybe just plug them in.

Kim and I are starting to look for little gems ourselves.  Last weekend we went to a Puerto Rican restaurant in North Hollywood called Mofongos.  WOW, they make a great mofongo.  Kim ordered the shrimp and I had a pork chop dish.  It was all delicious! We will go back again.

Recently my father has been looking into Gourmet Food Trucks (His brand-new Facebook Fan page).  Now this one sounds fun.  Tonight, Kim and I are going to one we have heard about for years called the  Kogi Truck.  I cannot wait as this will be our first one!!  If all goes well I will post another entry tonight or tomorrow with pictures.

Good food is something Kim and I have always had in common.  Kim has always enjoyed cooking.  Before the career I have today I worked in a kitchen and worked my way up to chef.  I had the pleasure of competing in a "Grand Cuisine" cooking show.  I did not place but it was an incredible experience.  Someone that I competed against was Roy from Roy's restaurants.  Yes, I know he does great work.  He might have placed or won that year.  That was all a long time ago.  Over the last couple of years I have started to enjoy cooking again.  These days I am much more about comfort food but I never know where inspiration will be.  I am thinking about sharing those experiences on here as well.  Plus if anyone actually reads this maybe they will have things to share with us as well.

Now Kim and I are not all about food.  We like our alcohol as well.  Kim is a Martini girl and I love good tequila (and Vodka, and......).  We are always mixing and trying new things.  There will be quick updates that share what we have either found, created or just mixed.  Wine is one of those areas where we are dabbling in again.  We are no way wine snobs nor do we know much about wine.  We just know what tastes good to us or not.  But we are learning.

Kim and I have been having a blast exploring the world of alcohol and food.  We hope that you enjoy our experiences and go out and try new things yourself.  Please comment on our posts.  Tell us what you like or even something that we may have liked that you hated.  There is a lot out there to enjoy!
